I just wanted to know your thoughts on this....
Even though I was off the whole week when the tropical storm came through the owner of the company told us to call when we woke up to see if we needed to come to the office or not. Well everyone did call and he said not to come in. Here is the catch though for that day we missed it was taken from our vacation time. For me it didnt bother me but for some other people it has rubbed them the wrong way. This is not the first time the owner has done this. It also happened when we evacuated for the hurricane 3 years ago. So do you think he should have done that at all. Just wondering what some of your companies did.
Is that policy in writing? It seems a bit unfair to determine company policy at will. If it is not in writing I would have a problem with not being informed BEFORE the fact that I would lose vacation time.
Another thought...
Were you guys given the option to make up the half day missed? Would your boss allow you to say, come in an hour early for a week to make it up? What about a half day on a saturday?
There is a written hand book, but nothing ever stays the same it changes day by day. No we are not allowed to make it up at all. You must work from 8 to 5 with your one hour lunch. It has gotten to where if you come back from lunch late you can not make it up it will end up coming out of your sick time or vacation time. One of the reasons I have thought about finding another job. But after being here 5 years I just would hate to start over. I also know for a fact I could make more money else where with what I do do.

We were told the same thing. We didn't have to come in, but we would have to use vacation time. So of course some of us, including me, drove into work. We were told at about 10:30 that morning that we could leave and we would be paid for the hours we were there plus 4 hours. But then get this, the people who did not show up at all, still got 4 hours as well. I didn't think that was very fair either. If I would've known that I wouldn't have even bothered to drive the 45 mins. in the first place. You'r company sounds rough, girl. I don't think anybody should have to use vacation time for a storm. It's crazy.
Sissa,
I would start looking. If you know that you are worth more don't stay just because you are comfortable. Change can be a good thing.
Another thing, it is hurricane season. What if, God forbid, we get a big one and we are unable to work for a week or more? Are you supposed to eat that? What if you don't get paid because you don't have enough vacation? It's something to think about. Does your company offer the insurance that would pay your salary if something catastrophic were to happen? I'd look into it. I have it. I get paid 80% of my salary if I am unable to work.
CS...
You just put a lot of answers to alot of questions I have been thinking. For example, if I would have carried the baby full term, I would not have gotten any maternity pay. I would have had to use my vacation and pto time. I believe I am going to update my resume and start looking.
Oh and no if a big one were to hit and you had no vacation or pto time left I would have not gotten paid for that time.
