I would have gladly used a vacation day to get paid for the day's work I missed when the "storm" blew in. But, I dont get paid vacation, and if I'm not at work, I'm not getting paid. Period. Perhaps if he would have given the option to either take it out of your vacation, or just lose out on 8 hours pay for that day it would have been a different outlook on the situation. but, I still would have gladly given up a days vacation in exchange for the days lost wages.

Unless you are salary, I dont see how you can expect someone to pay you if you are not at work, regardless of the reason (exception being earned sick pay, vacation time, STD/LTD insurance, ect). If you are not at work, you are not producing income for your employer, and are expecting them to pay you. I cant seem to wrap my mind around that concept. Sure, the storm was not your fault, and it would be nice to be paid out of sheer generosity by your employer, but the storm was not your employers fault either. Money going out with no money coming in is a bad business practice.
sissa,

If you're comfortable enough changing jobs, then I agree that you should start looking. It sounds like that company does not value you the way they should. It is dead wrong to tell an employee to not come in because of dangerous weather and then make them use vacation time to cover it. You weren't responsible for the weather. A good company takes care of its employees. You deserve better.

gabby,

I feel for you too, girl. It's not fair that those who chose to stay home get rewarded with free pay. Your company is rewarding complacency and ignoring integrity.
Totally understand your point Caymon. I guess what bothers me is we didnt get the choice to use it or not. Just glad I have a job right now because we are slow. But I have also made up my mind to start looking. My boss is not that far from retirement and I dont know what will happen to me when he does. Just dont like sitting and waiting and then hurrying up to do something about it after the fact.

I didn't see this until after I had posted my last comment. That's a very good point that I hadn't considered. I wasn't thinking about hourly waged workers when I posted my comments. Salary people should be covered though, in my opinion.

Well Sissa...You already know that I got paid for not coming in on that day. But my boss told me not to come in and he would pay me! But that is the way a company should take care of it's employees....NOT EVERYONE HERE GOT PAID! I was told to stay home and they would pay me...But the ones that didn't call or didn't show up or were told to stay home with pay.....then they didn't get paid!

And look at me! Yes I'm comfortable where I am at too but certain situations have me looking for another job also! You know you are worth more...Go out and get it! Don't just settle for something because it's comfortable. You never know what "looking" may get you!!! It's a leap of faith that we have to take but when you have had enough...The leap is worth it!
At my job the owner told all the employees to call or come in the morning and he will let us know what to do. I called in and got paid for my 8 hours. The ones that didn't call or show up they lost out on those hours. My boss is a retired Marine and he is kind of strick when it comes to following directions but if they would of listened they would of got that "FREE MONEY"
