The Baytown Sun is reporting on the difficulties that the Goose Creek school district is having teaching / transitioning students from other countries that do not speak english to speak and understand english. In elementary school they have separate bilingual classes with bilingual teachers for these students. In junior school and high school they are in regular classes but each school has a specialist that assists all of the students in this program. It does not seem to be working in that most of the ESL students scored poorly on the TAKS and as a district very poorly when compared to state averages.
What is the best way to teach students that speak other native languages English? Keep in mind some students enter schools here in the upper grades....should we have more bilingual teachers....less?
